1982 ~Sects, Drugs, Rock 'N' Roll

This is a "snipit" of an interview Pete did with Paul Du Noyer in 1982 right after the release of "Chinese Eyes".

Interviewer: "You called your new LP "Chinese Eyes". Why is that"?

Pete: "I think the fundamental thing we're suffering from at the moment in that we've become so media-ised, so use to externalizing everything that we don't take responsibility for fucking ANYTHING. And that's really what the title is about: the heroes and villians all look the same. I don't want to explain it and make it too pat 'cause I see it on a thousand different levels".

Interviewer: "And you dedicated it to "teenagers in love"?

Pete: "Yeah, that was a last minute thing. And it's to my wife and myself who are behaving like teenagers at the moment".

The interview continues and here is the part I find most interesting. Pete says, "I feel I've been externalized to a great extent and I've fought against this more than anybody in the business.
I think it's a weekness in me, this need to get reacted to. It's not an inability to deal with "stardom" because that's a completely empty quality.
When it comes down to it, the feedback I need is LETTERS. That's why I try to reply; as people know they CAN get through to me if they want".

How profound? Build it and they will come!
